You hear words thrown around the news like, “Refugee”, “Asylum-seeker” and “economic Migrant” but not everyone truly understands what they mean. These three readings helped give me a better understanding of the words I did not know the meanings of, as well as informed me of new terms and the process that asylum seekers must go through in order to obtain refugee status. It was interesting to learn that there is the RSD, Refugee Status Determination process/committee, who basically has the control over the state of these individuals lives. The other interesting thing I learned was that if they are denied refugee status, the individual is not required to return to their homeland; I assumed that they would be forced to return. The appeal process was enlightening as well along with the UNHCR overruling a country's decision and making an individual an universal refugee. There is a lot more behind the outlandish news stories and the opinions of close-minded people, and with knowledge about the terms and the subject overall comes more action and a better sense of urgency to help.
