What is the purpose of this article? How—or does—its form help communicate its purpose?
The purpose of this article was to describe the process and the concepts behind multimodal writing. For the author, they had started in one area to present their topic (Prezi) but later realized that this format was not adequate for the information they were trying to convey. This happened a few more times, until finally they found the best way to support the information, by making this website with multiple audio files and photos. The way in which this article is set up is much different than other scholarly articles. Each of the definition related sections featured people who were basically experts in their fields speaking about certain topics or words. With the audio clip came a true transcript, word for word, of their responses. The vocabulary wasn’t too fancy and the explanations were relatable and understandable.
What 2-3 concepts, ideas, or comments from the 2nd half of “What’s in a Name?” did you find most interesting or thought provoking or compelling. Why? In other words, what did you hear in the audio clips that you found interesting?
New Media is a difficult word to define. In the first ever use, new media was referred to the creation of the radio. Now with new media coming out each year, the definition is stretched and added to accommodate different platforms such as T.V., digital, internet, etc. The mediated world is constantly being update, ultimately creating confusion within the definition of new media and other related concepts.
Another interesting concept I found in “What’s in a Name?” included the process of remixing. When one professor's student decided to create a video compilation with Obama’s voice, Peter Griffin’s character and some other noises in the back, it’s intriguing to look into the choice that people make when putting all of it together. Why not use Peter Griffin’s voice, and Obama’s body? Another concept of this remix is, how will someone get the views? In the end, it’s all about getting a widespread use of different mediums and platforms, as well as creating something that your audience will ultimately enjoy watching and listening to.
